Gainsborough Old Hall

Gainsborough Old Hall is truly one of the hidden gems of Lincolnshire. Over five hundred years old, it is one of the best preserved medieval manor houses in the country.

Gainsborough Hall The Hall was built by Sir Thomas Burgh around 1460. The Burghs were rich, flamboyant and powerful people. Gainsborough Old Hall was not only their home, but also a demonstration of their wealth and importance.

Architecturally it has changed very little over the years. It is principally a timber-framed building, giving it its characteristic striped appearance. On the north east corner is a brick tower. A splendid view of the town awaits those who brave the fifty-nine step climb to the top!

Famous Visitors

As its centre is the Great Hall where Richard III and Henry VIII once banqueted. Its vast arched roof is a monument to the medieval craftsmen who built it. The kitchens remain virtually unchanged since the time of the royal visitors. Authentic replicas help to create the historical atmosphere.

Gainsborough Old Hall has played host to other famous visitors. John Wesley, founder of Methodism, was here several times. The Mayflower Pilgrims also worshipped here in secret before setting off to the brave New World in search of religious freedom.

Gainsborough HallThe Hickman Family

In 1596 the Burghs had fallen on hard times and the Hall was sold to the Hickman family. The new owners undertook some improvements, putting in new windows and brick cladding some of the timber framing. Yet none of these changes detract from the essentially medieval structure of the building.
