Perhaps
the Council’s longest running success story is the annual
Civic Festival, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006. The
Town Council took over the Festival in 1976, when it had been reduced
to a one day event. Since then, with the help of a volunteer committee,
local organisations and businesses, it has been built up into a
thriving two weeks of activities which now also embraces musical
concerts, local dramatic societies’ performances and celebrations
of the town’s legacy. Traditional events are not forgotten
- with such popular favourites as the Carnival Parade, Baby Show,
Quiz Night and Families Day.
The Council’s Entertainments Office always welcomes suggestions
