Heritage
DH
Lawrence Heritage – brings to life the works of the famous
novelist, poet and artist David Herbert Lawrence, writer of such
works as ‘Lady Chatterleys Lover’. Discover how his
hometown of Eastwood shaped his creative, and often controversial,
works.
DH Lawrence Birthplace Museum – See the first home
of DH Lawrence where he was born approximately 120 years ago. Today
the museum is an astounding re-creation of a Victorian family home,
which is brought to life through informative and friendly guides.
Explore the very heart of a working class Victorian life through
the home of the Lawrence family.
Durban House Heritage Centre – The former HQ of the
local coal company Barber, Walker & Co, where as a boy DH Lawrence
would pick up his fathers wages. Durban House successfully depicts
the Victorian past of Lawrence’s mining hometown.
Eastwood Hall Conference Centre – A beautiful and historic
listed building, which was previously the HQ of British Coal. The
hall is now a large conference centre consisting of 150 bedrooms
and 36 meeting rooms and is set amongst its own grounds of 25 acres.
The
Sun Inn – which stands on the corner of Mansfield
Rd and Derby Rd is claimed to be the birthplace of the Midland Railway,
for it was here in 1832 that a meeting local colliery owners took
place and decided to build a railway line from Pinxton to Leicester
to facilitate the transport of coal.
St Marys Parish Church – The original church was replaced
by a brick building in 1764 although some parts date back to 1250.
The church was enlarged in 1826 from public funds before being replaced
in 1858 as the town expanded. The building was nearly all destroyed
by fire in 1963. Only the tower remained and the present building
was added in 1967.
The
Blue Line Trail – Take a walk along the Blue Line Trail
around Eastwood which links the DH Lawrence Birthplace Museum with
three other houses that Lawrence lived in and eight other related
sites. See first hand the beautiful countryside and the real locations
that inspired his works. Completing the trail you are able to share
his inspred view of industry and landscape and gain an extra appreciation
of the novels, characters and sites that once graced this area.
Leisure
Eastwood Community Sports Centre – The 1.3 million
sports centre facility was officially opened in October 2002 by
Geoff Hoon MP. This is the final flagship project of the Phoenix
Project and was made possible by funding from Government, lottery,
local authorities and local business sponsorship. The centre comprises
a four-court sports hall, floodlit multi use games area and a refurbished
school gym.
Eastwood Town Football Club – more commonly known as
‘The Badgers’ was founded in 1953. They are in the Northern
Counties East League Premier Division and play their home games
at the newly renovated Coronation Park ground, off Chewton Street

Coronation
Park – This delightfully picturesque park located towards
the Hilltop end of Nottingham Rd is a hidden haven of tranquillity.
It hosts a flat green bowls lawn, basket ball pitch, skateboard
park, multi sports artificial practice pitch a children playground
and some of the most beautiful seasonal planting that Eastwood has
to offer.
Colliers
Wood – Created on the site of the former Moorgreen Colliery,
Colliers Wood is a community woodland which forms part of the Greenwood
Community Forest. The area was created through a restoration scheme
between 1996-1997. An extensive footpath network has been created
using reclaimed shale from the site, and since its creation, has
been a valuable habitat for wildlife.
Eastwood Town Cricket Club - situated off Greenhills Road,
is a high quality cricket field, and a well maintained cricket pavilion.
The Cricket Club is well managed and has teams playing in a number
of different competitions.
Shopping
Shopping in Eastwood – Eastwood and Hilltop have an
excellent and diverse range of shops. The variety and choice are
easily equal to those of a city centre shopping arcade, and all
within the proximity of the main street, Nottingham Rd.
Eastwood Market – Situated on The Hollies, Nottingham
Rd, the market runs every Thursday and Friday and boasts a wide
range of fresh foods, clothes, household supplies, books and plants.
Arts and Entertainment

Lawrence Craft Centre – Situated next to the DH Lawrence
Birthplace Museum the centre is a complex of working studios, which
promotes a range of fasciniating work. Each unit offers its own
form of arts and crafts to meet the needs and interest of enthusiast
and novices alike.
Stages - A varied programme of quality professional touring
theatre at Eastwood Theatre (off Mansfield Rd) with an Autumn /
Winter and Spring / Summer programme. Everything from family shows
to Greek Tragedy.
Eastwood Arts Festival – Each July a three-week programme
of creative arts events and activities in and around Eastwood, including
participatory arts opportunities, music, drama, family fun days
and much more.
