Cycling and Walking in the Wiltshire Downs

If you fancy exploring the peaceful country lanes and spectacular Wiltshire countryside on foot or by bicycle, then you are in luck. Cycling and Walking in the Wiltshire Downs

The area around Devizes is excellent walking country. Close to home is the Kennet and Avon Canal whose tow path takes you through beautiful countryside and also past some welcoming canal-side pubs. You can also walk on Roundway Down to see the White Horse close up and also tread the civil war battlefield. Further afield the Ridgeway, the Wansdyke and Savernake Forest are all within easy reach. With almost every step you will enjoy a unique blend of historic and prehistoric landmarks and some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain. There is also a longer walk which visits all eight White Horses in Wiltshire.

For cyclists there are six special cycle routes of varying lengths in the Wiltshire Downs, as well as a section of the Wiltshire Cycleway. Two of these routes pass through or close to Devizes.
