Chippenham
is twinned with La Flèche in France (1981/82) and Friedberg
in Germany (1992/93).
La Flèche:
Lies in the historical and popular holiday area of the Loire Valley.
It is approx. 45 km. south west of Le Mans and an easy half day
drive from the ferry ports of Le Havre, Caen and Cherbourg. The
town has a population of some 20,000 and it developed around the
riverside site of the XI century castle where the Town Hall now
stands and centres on the prestigious and splendid Prytanée
academy.
Friedberg:
This
Bavarian town is a prehistoric settlement that flourished in Roman
times and again in the later Renaissance. It is situated approx.
55 km. from Munich and 8 km. from Augsburg. Now a vibrant town of
around 26,000 inhabitants, it spills beyond its medieval walls in
a colourful blend of gabled houses, shops, towers and churches set
in an undulating farmland landscape. The town lies on the “Romantic
Road”, a famous tourist route linking the vineyards of Würtzburg
to the mountain foothills of Fussen.
Chippenham Twinning Association aims to promote friendship and understanding
between the towns and regularly organises both exchange visits and
social events. In addition it publishes regular newsletters to keep
members up to date. The Association has an active and growing
membership and new members are always welcome.
