The South Downs Planetarium and Science
Centre
An exciting and stimulating way to learn more about the Universe
in which we live….
The planetarium can show you the stars at any time of the day using
a star projector. It will project
nearly 4,500 stars onto the domed ceiling of the star theatre. Visitors
can view the night sky in comfort, without interference from clouds
or bright lights.
With the star projector, slides, videos, DVDs, music and a lively
commentary, the planetarium allows one to explore the Universe by
entering worlds beyond our own. The presentations are in a dark
theatre to give the desired effect, so arrival must be 15 minutes
before the start of each presentation to allow ones eyes to adjust
to the dark. Latecomers are not allowed to enter.

Fishbourne
Roman Palace & Gardens
In 1960 a mechanical digger cut through massive wall foundations
in a field in Fishbourne village. This led to the discovery of the
remains of the largest domestic Roman building yet found in Britain.
Amazingly, it still contained many mosaic floors, some almost complete.
The remains of the north wing of the building were so spectacular
that a protective building was erected over them and the site was
opened to the public. Visitors can walk around part of the North
Wing and enjoy the remarkable mosaic floors, including the famous
Cupid on a Dolphin. A museum displays a wide range of Roman objects
found during the excavations on the site. These include the sculpted
marble head of the possible one-time owner of the palace, King Togidubnus,
and a beautiful onyx cameo carved with an image of a racehorse.

The Goodwood Estate
In 1697, Charles Lennox, first Duke of Richmond, son of Charles
II, bought a hunting lodge called Goodwood and so began an association
with Chichester which has continued to this day. Over the years,
the Dukes of Richmond have served as Mayors of the City, have been
benefactors, notably by the gift of Priory Park, and patrons of
many societies and organizations. Even today, this involvement of
the Lennox family in the well being of the city continues.
Goodwood
House The present Goodwood House is a flint-faced Regency
building set in the heart of the Goodwood Estate. Its unassuming
exterior hides a suite of magnificent staterooms containing an outstanding
collection of furniture, porcelain, paintings and tapestries. The
house is open to the public, and is also available, in part, for
private events and weddings.
Goodwood Race Course With its setting in the beautiful
Sussex Downs, Goodwood Race course is considered by many to be the
most beautiful racecourse in Britain, some say in the world. The
racecourse was a popular venue with Edward VII, and since then the
Goodwood Festival Meeting in August, known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’,
has been a highlight of the racing and social season. In recent
years there has been continuing development of facilities to match
its incomparable setting.
Goodwood
Festival of Speed In the nineteen thirties, Goodwood hosted
a motor racing track, but the development of modern day Formula
One racing cars made the track unsafe. However, the Earl of March,
heir to the Duke, created the Festival of Speed, a celebration of
motor sport and car culture. For three days in early July, drivers
and cars arrive from all over the world to take part in the festival.
So popular is the event that entry is by advance ticket only.
Goodwood Revival Meeting A three-day festival of nostalgia usually
in September, when the early days of motor racing are celebrated
and carefully restored cars are brought together to recapture the
spirit and glamour of an earlier era – even the spectators
dress in period. Again, the popularity of the event means entry
is by advanced ticket only.
