Chichester Festivities
The Chichester Festivities established in 1975, is an annual event
taking place over an extended fortnight centred on the first two
weeks in July. The events during the festivities range widely over
literature, music, painting, crafts, politics and history with many
national and international artists and speakers taking part. Venues
are throughout the City. In recent years a fringe has appeared alongside
the main festivities. The occasion is used by many local groups
to put on a special programme of events.

Chichester Film Festival
The Chichester Film Festival held in the Chichester Cinema at New
Park was started in 1992 and traditionally takes place in the last
week in August and the first week in September. During this period
over 70 films are shown including premieres, previews and new releases
from around the world. In addition there are classic revivals and
retrospectives of both actors and directors. Altogether, probably
the major film festival in the southeast outside London.

Chichester City Gala Carnival
The first Gala Day was held in 1956 and was established by Leslie
Evershed-Martin, former Mayor, city freedom holder and founder of
the Chichester Festival Theatre.
In its heyday it featured a parade, marching bands, a carnival in
Priory Park with a charity collection with a cornflower symbol.
Sadly it lost some of its sparkle and ceased in 1995. In 2006 the
City Council, decided to revive the Gala with a procession of marching
bands, floats, and walkers, and once again a charity collection
with the cornflower emblem. Concurrently the Chamber of Commerce
organised the traditional ‘Cuckoo in the window’ competition.
The occasion was a great success and is likely to become a regular
event in the City Calendar.

Southern Cathedrals Festival
Although started originally in 1904, the Southern Cathedrals Festival
was established in its present form in 1960 when Winchester , Salisbury
and Chichester agreed a three yearly cycle each taking it in turn
to play the host to a five day festival of music and liturgy, and
to provide an opportunity for the three choirs to work together.
The main theme of the festival is choral music but there is also
an organ recital and the Festival Eucharist on Friday is one of
the highlights.

Chichester
in Bloom
Both the City and the District Council are committed to making the
City a green and environmentally friendly place. A forum for discussion
is the Friends of the Park, a consultative body aimed at encouraging
residents to have their say in the shaping of their parks and open
spaces. A sign of the success of the policy is that in 2006 Chichester
won a Silver Gilt Award in the South and South East in Bloom Competition.
