University of Chichester
The University of Chichester is one of the new smaller universities
and is based on two sites – the Bishop Otter Campus at Chichester
and the Bognor Regis Campus. The Chichester site dates back to 1839
when it was established as ‘Bishop Otter’s School for
Training Masters.’ This institution closed in 1867 but was
reopened in 1873 as a college for training female teachers. The
Bognor Regis site was opened in 1946 as an emergency teacher training
college. The two colleges merged in 1977 to form what was then called
the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education, the name later being
changed to Chichester Institute of Higher Education. It became the
University College of Chichester, attaining full University status
in October 2005.
The university has approximately 5,000 full-time and part-time students
and offers a wide range of courses which are taught in the schools
of Cultural Studies, International, Physical Education, Social Studies,
Sport Exercise & Health Sciences, Teacher Education and Visual
& Performing Arts. In addition to the various undergraduate
courses there are opportunities to study taught postgraduate courses
leading to Masters degrees through more than fifteen routes within
the Postgraduate Awards Scheme.

West Dean College
West Dean College lies six miles to the north of Chichester. It
is run by the Edward James Foundation, a charitable trust formed
in 1964, and is based in an attractive country house surrounded
by an estate which includes gardens, an arboretum, farms, wooded
areas and a nature reserve. The income from the estate helps to
support the work of the college.
The Foundation was established by the late Edward James to realise
his vision of preserving and teaching the arts in their widest sense.
Edward James was a supporter of Surrealism and built up a collection
of paintings and artefacts that is thought to be the finest in private
hands. He knew and gave practical help to Dali and Magritte among
others.
The college offers residential courses at postgraduate level in
conservation and restoration (books, ceramics, clocks, antique furniture
and fine metalwork), visual and applied arts (sculpture, painting,
drawing and tapestry weaving) and the making of early stringed musical
instruments. There are also MA courses in Conservation Studies and
Visual Arts. A wide range of short courses take place during the
year for students of all abilities in the crafts, visual arts, music
and creative writing.
