Carterton Town Council was established in 1985 when the Carterton & Black Bourton Parishes were split.War Memorial

Carterton’s sixteen Town Councillors are elected every four years and represent the five wards within the town. The next Election for Town Council is due in May 2011. Details of serving Town Councillors are available from the Town Hall and are also on the Town Council’s website. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Chairmen of the various sub-committees are elected annually by the Town Councillors.

The Town Council meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7.45 pm. The Planning Committee meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7.30 pm. Agendas are posted on notice boards and on the website and members of the public are welcome to attend. The Council employs three office staff: the Town Clerk, the Assistant Town Clerk and the Administration Assistant. They are available at the Town Hall between 9.00 am and 4.30 pm to help with any enquiries.

The Town Hall is near the centre of the town on the Alvescot Road by the War Memorial and has a meeting room that is available for hire for meetings and social events. Telephone the Town Council staff on 01993 842156 for details or to make a booking, or email scatt@carterton-tc.gov.uk

The Functions of the Town Council

The Town Council maintains a number of facilities throughout the town including two recreation grounds, five children’s play parks, a skateboard park and BMX track, squash courts, allotments, a burial ground at Black Bourton and an area of water meadows which is open to the public. The Council also actively pursues, through direct action or grant aid, Maples Play Areameasures to improve and enhance the general environment and condition of the town. The Town Council can offer advice on a range of issues and we are able to give visitors and residents useful points of contact for services provided by other organisations. We are also able to issue Travel Tokens to Carterton residents on behalf of the District Council.

The Town Council was re-awarded Quality status by central government in 2009 in recognition of its proactive approach to providing first class local services.
