The possibility of a major expansion of Carterton was first suggested
in 1988 in response to a public consultation exercise held by West
Oxfordshire District Council. The development has received support
on the grounds that such a major expansion would bring about significant
improvements in the town’s infrastructure including a link
road, a school and a new health centre. The development covers 70
hectares on the north east edge of the town.
When completed the new development will provide about 1,400 new
houses and flats set around two major avenues. A new primary school
opened in January 2003 and a local centre with a number of small
retail units is under construction. The Town Council is building
a new community hall on this site which will provide a large meeting
place for use by all the residents of the town. A country park is
being developed along the northern edge of the site and will offer
pleasant walks and cycle routes.
