ongoing history

The Burntwood area has many clubs and organisations that keep its residents busy during their leisure times. For those interested in their local heritage, or would like to find out about it, the Burntwood Chase Heritage Group [BCHG] is a voluntary group meeting on the first Tuesday of the month at St John's Community Church, High Street, Chase Terrace at 7.00 p.m., from September to May to show films etc., to the public. On the second Tuesday of the month group meetings are held at Chasetown Recreation Club High Street, Chasetown from 7.00 pm. Meetings are informal and open to all.

The BCHG grew out of the Keepers of the Archive which was formed in 1999 to preserve an 'Archive' of stories and photographs of Burntwood History. The BCHG now have around nine monthly 'Nostalgia Film Nights' during the year; give talks and slideshows to various groups free of charge, and have created an extensive 'Heritage Trail'. Grants from various organisations have enabled the BCHG to erect around seventy 'Blue Plaques' across the whole of the Burntwood Town area. These depict sites of local historical interest and form three separate walks that can be followed using 'Trail Booklets'. These can be obtained from various places in the area.

In September 2003 with the sponsorship of Burntwood Town Council, the BCHG opened a 'Heritage Display' within the Old Mining College Centre. This is open every week day and is free to view. A permanent Heritage Centre for Burntwood is the aim of all our members, and everyone is invited to join the Group.
