Burntwood
Town Council is one of the largest Town Councils in the country
with a rising population approaching 30,000 according to the 2001
Census.
The Town Council has the same functions as a Parish Council, including
consultation and recommendation on planning applications, grant
aid and championing the cause of local organisations or groups where
support is needed for the benefit of the community. The Town Council
places great emphasis on community safety and has been at the forefront
of establishing and funding many projects including new street lighting,
CCTV and the newly created post of Community Development Worker
for Burntwood (jointly funded by the Town Council, Lichfield District
Council and HomeZone).
The Town Council also administers the Burntwood Cemetery. The cemetery,
which opened in 2007, is situated on St Matthews Road, Burntwood.
The Council has 22 elected Members, who are elected for a four year
term and who cover seven individual wards. The Town Council meets
six times per year and on such other occasions as necessary. There
are eleven meetings of the Planning Applications Committee each
year. The following Committees also meet at various times each year:
Grant Aid Committee, Best Value Committee, Personnel Committee,
Burntwood Wakes Committee and Burial Grounds Committee.
The Town Council applied successfully to become a Quality Parish
Council – Quality Status was awarded in June 2008 and the
certificate was presented to the Town Council on 17 July 2008 by
Vivien Evans, Chief Executive of the Staffordshire Parish Councils
Association.
