Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge are well served for sports and leisure.
There is an excellent Sports Centre at the King Alfred School (open
to the public 7 days a week) where the sports hall
and fitness centre offer a wide range of sporting activities, including
squash and badminton courts, fitness classes, indoor and outdoor
training, gymnastic and trampoline classes, martial arts clubs and
holiday play schemes.
The Avenue Tennis Club based at the Grove was founded in 1909. Today
it has a brand new clubhouse built in 2001 with support from the
National Lottery, Sedgemoor District Council and the Lawn Tennis
Association. There are 8 quality floodlit courts and the club is
very much a community club, with membership of all ages and standards.
Course for all levels are organised throughout the year by the resident

The Burnham-on-Sea Swim and Sports Academy on the Berrow Road is
open from 7am to 10pm. For a full timetable and details of activities
available, contact the Pool on 01278 785909. The annual sprint Triathlon
which takes place in June attracts some 350 participants from all
over the country and Europe, organised by the
swim and sports academy. The academy also organises the annual summer
massed swim from the Esplanade to Stert Island watched by thousands.
There are several Golf Courses in the area, including the championship
links at the Burnham and Berrow Golf Club, contact the Club Secretary

Local residents and visitors alike are delighted that their own
Ritz Cinema has recently been refurbished, with twin screens, new
seating (with plenty of leg room) and a new sound system. It now
shows all the latest films as quickly as the big provincial cities.
The Princess is a venue for band concerts and other shows. For more

A guide to Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge would not be complete without
mention of the world famous Somerset Guy Fawkes Illuminated Carnivals
dating back to 1881, including the Highbridge and Burnham-on-Sea
Carnival, which takes place in November every year.
To herald its procession a wonderful Firework Display takes place
on the day before (a Sunday) on the Sea-front, Burnham-on-Sea.
