Shopping and Eating Out

BURNHAM-ON-SEA
The main town shopping area is the High Street and Victoria Street with additional shopping in the side streets and along the sea front Esplanade. Together the High Street and Victoria Street have well over 100 shops and businesses including national chains and independents.
Pier Street, Burnham-on-Sea
The wide variety of shops and businesses includes Bakers and Confectioners, an award winning Fishmonger, Greengrocers and a Farm shop, a busy Post Office, Florists, Hairdressers, Travel Agents, Gift and Glassware shops, Off-license, Internet café and Ladies and Gents Clothing stores. There are Shoe shops, Jewellers, Furniture and Bedding, Linens and Curtains, Mobility stores, Art Galleries, a Music shop, Electrical goods, Mobile Phones, Hardware and DIY stores.

There are Pharmacies and Opticians, several Newsagents, a specialist Angling shop, Pet shops, Sports shops, Toys, Haberdashery and Crafts, Fabrics and Wool… and many more. Several long established family businesses with an excellent record of customer service are still going strong. To name a few - Central Radio Services-more than 50 years; G W Hurley- Newsagent, Toymaster-toyshop, Bookstore and Sports shop, was established nearly 90 years ago.

In addition there are the supermarkets-A new Morrison’s, adjacent to the seafront in Pier Street; Lidl in Oxford Street and a Tesco store at the main motorway entrance to the town. The Burnham Shopping Centre, in the High Street is a large arcade store selling everything from “Clothes To Cosmetics and Chamois Leathers”.

Burnham is well supplied with Estate Agents, branches of all major Banks, Building Societies, Solicitors, Accountants and Financial Advisors. There are many who provide normal maintenance services - Electricians, Plumbers, Car services - fuel, tyres, batteries and spares.

There are Dentists, Podiatrists, Chiropodists and Chiropractors. Burnham Medical Centre is in Love Lane opposite the Hospital. There is also a Health and Whole food store in Victoria Street.

A Farmers’ market takes place at least monthly in the High Street and fortnightly during the summer months.

The town offers a wide choice of pubs located in the town centre and throughout the town, many serving excellent pub grub. There is a wide selection of cafes to choose from providing refreshments, snacks and meals during the day. At night, the town’s restaurants include- Classic French, Italian, Chinese and Indian food as well as a number of take-away establishments offering English and Overseas cuisine.

The air conditioned Ritz Cinema in Victoria Street seats over 230 and boasts two screens with the latest projection equipment showing the very newest releases.

A free of charge pocket sized “Shoppers Guide” is available in shops, cafes and offices around the town. The Guide, produced by the local Burnham-on-Sea Chamber of Trade, provides an A-Z guide to shops and services in Burnham. HIGHBRIDGE
Shopping in Highbridge is widely spread with centres in Market Street and Church Street and other businesses located at the nearby Morland and Walrow estates, as well as on the edges of the town.

A large car park is located in the town centre behind the Town Green and the Frank Foley Statue and provides easy access to Market Street and Church Street.Christmas lighting, High Street, Burnham-on-Sea, December 2008

Shops and businesses include-Pharmacies, traditional Pubs and Inns, a busy Post Office (in Church street) , Computer supplies, Internet café, TV and Radio services, Cycle specialists-(Skidmarx), a large Bakery (long established and well known for its own baked breads and confectionery), a Lighting Shop, Car Parts shop, Carpets and Flooring suppliers and Upholsterers. There are Printers, Graphic Designers, Web designers and Sign makers.

Also a full array of Newsagents, and all trades – Plumbers, Electricians etc. Also several Hairdressing salons plus the Hairdressing Academy.

The area is well served with supermarkets with a new 40,000 sq ft ASDA Store in Caxton Road (off Church street); and along Market Street you can find a Somerfield Store and a One Stop Shop which offers late shopping seven days a week.

The town boasts several garages offering full servicing, MOT, Tyres and parts, a Tool and Generator hire firm and at the motorway entrance to the town, a Caravan sales firm with a full Caravan, Camping and Leisure Accessories shop.

In addition Highbridge has Self Storage facility firms and a Cash and carry.

Highbridge is noted for the quality and breadth of its restaurants and take-aways which include several Indian, Chinese and Italian and Turkish as well as a new take-away Pizza place. There are several excellent Traditional Fish and Chip establishments. A fine Chef run restaurant is located within the Speedway Track Arena on the A38 leading into Highbridge.
Market Street, Highbridge
There are a number of Solicitors, Accounting firms and Financial advisors and a major Bank has a branch in the town. The Highbridge Medical Centre in Pepperall Road has its own Pharmacy.

The Town library is situated in Alpha House in Market Street, and The Highbridge Social Club is situated in Church Street.

Both Chambers organize the Christmas Lights for the towns and normally have a “switch on” late in November each year.
