Each year the Town Council presents Civic Awards to show the appreciation
of the local community to those citizens who give their time freely
to help others, or to those who have brought worthwhile prestige
to our twin towns. They are usually awarded for voluntary service,
or for exceptional service within the recipient’s own sphere
of employment.
The Town Council introduced these awards in 1987 at the initiative
of the Mayor at that time, Councillor Neville Jones OBE. We are
proud that visiting civic heads have commented favourably on these
awards, and that two neighbouring towns have followed the idea.
The first four awards were presented at a Princess Hall reception
in 1987. “Number One” was our own local war hero, Admiral
Sir Mark Pizey GBE., DSO*., CB., DL. The following year, when we
commenced our own annual Civic Service, the award ceremony became
a central part of the event.
Nominations are invited, usually around March, from the public,
these should be sent to the Town Clerk’s office in Jaycroft
Road. These are then carefully considered by the Town Improvements
Committee and then submitted, in confidence, to the full Council
for approval. Following acceptance of the awards by the recipients,
names are announced a couple of weeks before the Civic Service.
Each winner receives a lapel badge bearing the Council’s Coat
of Arms and a framed certificate, together with a copy of the citation.
