Welcome to Burgess Hill

Burgess Hill is a friendly town with a strong community spirit, good schools and leisure facilities, a modern business park and a new town centre currently being planned. As with other towns in the South East, there are pressures for additional housing, but Burgess Hill Town Council has a Vision for this expansion, which includes the provision of a wide range of infrastructure and improved facilities. The new town centre will include a wide range of modern shops, a new town square, state of the art Library and a new Arts and Cultural Centre.

From its modest beginning based on the brick and tile industry, the population of Burgess Hill rose to 14,000 in 1961. In recent years the town has expanded rapidly and is now a thriving community of some 30,000 residents. It is located in gently rolling countryside with views to the Sussex Downs to the south and the High Weald to the north. It is a very compact town and a pleasant place to live with good facilities and easy access to the surrounding countryside.

There is a wide range of clubs, societies and organisations, which cater for social, cultural, sporting and community needs and contribute greatly to the quality of life in the town. Entertainment highlights of the year include a week long Summer Festival in June and the Bonfire Procession and celebrations in late September. In December, the streets are decorated with Christmas lights as a prelude to the Christmas Festival.

Town Centre facilities include the modern covered shopping mall in Market Place Shopping Centre, the outdoor Martlets Shopping Centre and the Martlets Hall complex incorporating the Library and 300 seat theatre. Community services such as the Citizens Advice Bureau, Council for Voluntary Service and other voluntary organisations, are centrally located in the Community Resource Centre.

Burgess Hill is a centre for business with the second largest business park in Sussex. It is part of the Gatwick Diamond business area and has an excellent location at the “Crossroads of Sussex”. It has direct access to the motorway network, two railway stations with a good service to London and Brighton and is close to Gatwick Airport.

The emphasis on service to residents and welcoming visitors is clearly demonstrated by Burgess Hill Town Council’s Help Point and Tourist Information Centre, located in the town centre. This provides easy access to services and information for residents and visitors. This guide is intended to give a taste of what it’s like to live in Burgess Hill and an indication of where you can obtain further information. Whether you are planning to live in the town, are visiting the area for business or pleasure, or are already a resident, we hope you will find it a useful source of reference and will enjoy your time in one of the very best communities in Sussex.
