Bridport Town Council is the parish authority for the town of
Bridport.
Local Government in Dorset is based on three tiers of local authorities,
i.e. County, District, and Parish. The town council is responsible
for and administers a range of local services and amenities e.g.
street market, allotments, cemetery etc. It supplements the provision
of local government services whilst promoting and representing the
town with other statutory bodies.

Bridport Town Council comprises 18 Councillors who are elected for
four years to represent their electors in the two wards of Bridport,
North and South Ward. Council elections take place in May 2007 and
2011.
The Town Mayor is the Chairman of the Council and is elected annually
from among the Councillors. On civic occasions when robed, the Town
Mayor is accompanied by two macebearers. The maces date from the
1600s, while the mayoral chain is one of the oldest in Dorset.
The Leader of the Council is elected annually by fellow councillors
and is the spokesperson on policy matters.
Town Council meetings take place approximately every six-eight weeks,
usually in the Town Hall. All of the meetings of the Town Council
are open to the public and are advertised on community notice boards.
Committee and all other meetings take place at Mountfield.
The Town Council is working towards Quality Council status and its
Vision, Strategies, Aims and Objectives are outlined in the Bridport
