Beverley Town Council

The roles and responsibilities of your local government

Established in 1999, the role of Beverley Town Council is to act as the grassroots tier of local government, nearest to the residents it serves. Although it is not responsible for major services such as council tax, housing, refuse collection, highways, licences, etc. (these falling under the management of East Riding of Yorkshire Council), it is a publicly elected body that represents the town of Beverley.

The parish itself is split into the four wards of Minster North, Minster South, St Mary’s East and St Mary’s West - on page 20 of this booklet you can see a map depicting both these ward boundaries and those of the neighbouring parishes of Woodmansey and Molescroft. In total there are 14 Town Councillors, for whom contact details can be found from page 19 of this booklet. The Town Council represents the community it serves and is headed by the Town Mayor of Beverley, who is elected annually from amongst councillors and acts as Chairman of the Council. The role has historic and local significance, as the Mayor acts as an ambassador and figurehead for the town. The roles of both the Mayor and Town Councillors are unpaid, although a £250 annual allowance is offered to each member to support them in their duties.

The Town Council is responsible for a range of services and events, including management of allotments, the Beverley Food Festival, Armed Forces Day, financially supporting Streetlighting and litterbins, distribution of money to local community groups via the Small and Large Grants Funds, production of a quarterly newsletter and providing vital practical support to a number of other events and initiatives. The Town Council employs five members of staff (Town Clerk, Assistant Clerk, Administrative Assistant, Town Handyperson and Macebearer) and has representation on a number of local strategic organisations and committees.

Beverley Town Council continues to be at the heart of the local community and hopes to strengthen its working relationship with neighbouring parishes over the coming years. All councillors are dedicated to their role and staff work hard to ensure the organisation continues to provide a worthwhile service for the residents of Beverley.
