Berkhamsted lies on the edge of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, along a valley on the A4251, almost equidistant from Watford (11 miles / 18 kilometres) and Aylesbury (12m / 19km).

The town has a fast link to the M25 (junction 20) by the A41 by-pass (runs parallel to the A4251, about a mile from the High Street), which also gives access to the M1 (junction 8) above Hemel Hempstead, the largest town of the Borough of Dacorum. Hemel town centre is 41/2m / 7km from Berkhamsted. The A416 leads to Chesham (41/2m / 7km) and South Buckinghamshire.

The two main bus services connect with Aylesbury, Hemel Hempstead and Watford, and with Slough via Chesham.

The town’s railway station is on the West Coast Main Line (WCML), with Silverlink trains to London (fastest, approx 30 minutes) and Birmingham; the nearest stop for Virgin Trains is Watford Junction.

The Grand Union Canal parallels the A4125 / A41 and the WCML.
