Banbury first achieved Fairtrade Town status on 11 March 2006. In
March 2010 we achieved renewal of this status and the certificate
awarded to us, hangs proudly in the Town Hall.
This accolade is awarded by The Fairtrade Foundation when a Town
has successfully achieved the following five goals:
• The Town Council passes a Resolution supporting Fairtrade
and agrees to serve Fairtrade tea and coffee at its meetings and
offices and canteens.
• A range of at least two Fairtrade products are readily available
in the areas shops and local cafes / catering establishments.
• Fairtrade products are used by an appropriate number of
local workplaces and community organisations.
• Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign.
• A local Steering Group, one member of which is a Town Councillor,
is convened to ensure progress and continued commitment to the campaign.
Banbury worked hard to achieve Fairtrade Town status and has to
continue to work hard to maintain this. The initial campaign instigated
a number of high profile events and now Fairtrade is represented
at all major Town events eg. Banbury & District Show, Town Mayor’s
Sunday & Hobby Horse Festival, The Four Shires Show & the
Town Mayor’s Charities Christmas Bazaar.
