Banbury Town Council came into being on 1 April 2000 giving the
town its first directly elected Council for 26 years. In 2002, it
relocated to the Town Hall, bringing this historic building into
daily use.
The Council consists of 22 members, one of whom is elected each
year as Town Mayor. The Town Mayor, whose forerunners date back
to 1608 and the granting of the town’s second Charter, plays
an important role in town life acting as an ambassador between the
Town Council and the general public.
The Town Council aims to work in partnership with other Councils
and public services to solve problems and provide facilities which
might not otherwise be addressed.
It also assists a wide variety of local organisations with grants,
thus enabling them to function for the benefit of the local community.
The Town Council is responsible for:
Civic events promoted by the Town Mayor, Town Hall, Grants to Voluntary
Organisations, Crime Prevention Initiatives, Recreation Facilities,
Allotments, Provision of Cemeteries, Parks, Open Spaces and Play
