Recreation, Sport at the Arts

There are a wide range of sporting facilities, clubs and societies in the town, comprehensive details can be found on the website Blues in actionwww.bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk.

Bishop’s Stortford Cricket Club (located in Cricketfield Lane) was founded in June 1825, its first match played was against Royston.

Hockerill Cricket Club is located in Beldams Lane where the local Running Club is also based. Close by is the new premises of Bishop’s Stortford Bowls Club which relocated there in 2008 from its former premises in Hockerill Street. The town’s other Bowls Club is the Havers Bowls Club situated on the corner of Havers Lane and South Street.

Bishop’s Stortford Football Club, “The Blues” founded in 1873, has had its share of successes over the years and was the first Club to win both the FA Amateur Cup and the FA Trophy. In recent years the Club, who play in the Blue Square South Division, moved to a purpose-built stadium in Woodside Park where Tottenham Hotspur were the first visitors.

Rugby is played at Silver Leys on the Hadham Road, a ground originally given to the town by Castle GardensSir Walter Gilbey. In addition to the Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club Silver Leys is home to the Squash Club and the Swifts Football Club.

There are a number of Golf Clubs locally including the Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club founded in 1910, located in Dunmow Road close to Junction 8 of the M11.

Swimmers are catered for at the Grange Paddocks Swimming Pool which also has a hi-tech gym. Next to the Swimming pool are a number of soccer pitches which are very well used by local amateur football teams.

Keen tennis players may become members of the Bishop’s Stortford Lawn Tennis Club in Cricketfield Lane or could use the three hard courts in the Castle Gardens. Nearby is the Town’s Paddling Pool which is a big hit with children in the summer months. There is also a fenced Childrens’ Play area which contains some excellent play equipment.

Close by is the Adventure Playground where the Skate Board is located in the same area where visiting fairs and the Annual Town Carnival and Funday take place.

Indoor Sports and recreation such as badminton are played at the Bishop’s Stortford Sports Hall which is situated in the grounds of the Bishop’s Stortford High School in London Road. There are also excellent new sports facilities at St Mary’s Catholic School and the Birchwood Castle GardensHigh School which hosts the Bishop’s Stortford Community Football Club.

There are numerous Arts Organisations and Societies in the town and these are also listed on the Town Council website www.bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk where contact details can be found.

Bishop’s Stortford is proud to boast of its amateur dramatic and operatic societies which regularly produce shows of the highest standards staged at the Rhodes Arts Complex in South Road. The Rhodes Arts Complex has a varied programme of professional events to cater for all tastes see www.rhodesbishopsstortford.org.uk.

Recent sell-outs include Pam Ayres, Stones in his Pockets (direct from the West End) and They Will Rock You-Queen Concert.
