The River Stort has long been an integral part of the town. Today
its tranquillity does not give a hint of the activity that surrounded
it during the latter part of the 18th century when the malting industry
was in its heyday and the river was canalised to ensure the economic
transport of malt to London.
In the 21st century the river and its banks provide more leisurely
pastimes and find popularity with anglers, hikers and visiting narrowboats.
During the Waterways Festival, organised by British Waterways, many
brightly painted and decorated narrowboats can be seen moored close
to the town centre. The festival provides activities for all the family
and gives the opportunity to try dragon boating, canoeing or cruising.
