Recreation and entertainment is well provided for in the town.
The 14.37 acre (5.8 hectares) Bath Grounds off Station Road, have
provision for cricket, football and bowls. Bands also play there
in the summer months. The Royal Hotel (built as The Hastings Hotel
in 1826-7) the old Station building, Ivanhoe Terrace and Rawdon
Terrace are all reminders of the days when Ashby was a Spa Town
and host to grand concerts and dances in the now demolished Ivanhoe
Baths. Hood Park, off North Street has a fine Leisure Centre, an
outdoor heated swimming pool, an all-weather surface, a children's
play area with a purpose-built SkatePark and provision for football
pitches. Other open spaces for football and outdoor recreation can
be found at Western Park, off Tamworth Road and Westfields, off
Moira Road.
Tennis is played at the Ashby Castle Club, off South Street and
there is an excellent golf course at the Willesley Park Golf Club
on Tamworth Road.
The Venture Theatre, officially opened in North Street in 1981,
has a regular programme of entertainments, whilst Ivanhoe Community
College has a wide range of vocational and non-vocational courses
available. Both the Library and the Museum (established in 1981
in a cottage in Lower Church Street, and settled in its present
home in 1991) in North Street provide education of yet another kind.
There is also a useful leaflet - Walks Around Ashby de la Zouch
- which provides ideas for rambles and the local Tourist Information
Centre (which shares a building with the Library and Museum in North
Street) is an invaluable help to both local and visitor alike.
