Recreation
The town’s parks, recreation grounds and playing fields are of a high standard and the pavilion accommodation on the playing fields is excellent. The parks are situated in extremely pleasant settings. Barn Meadow, alongside the River Misbourne gives a panoramic view of the Old Town and its valley; Hervines Park on the Hill is set amid woodlands whilst Westwood Park at Little Chalfont stands high above the Chess Valley.
Football, cricket and hockey may be played at all parks and at Hervines Park is the six rink bowling green, proud home of Amersham Bowls Club and of county standard. This green may also be used by the public. Tennis is played on grass courts at Barn Meadow and on four all-weather courts at Westwood Park. Adjacent to the town’s Civic Centre is the King George’s Field, founded by public subscription at the time of King George V’s Coronation and now used as a play area.
For nature lovers, open spaces and woodlands have been conserved, including the Memorial Gardens and Church Mead in the Old Town also Hervines Woods and Willow Wood. The woodland, and pond at Finch Lane, Little Chalfont, have been restored and the Town recently bought Parsonage Wood covering 22 acres on the hillside above the Old Town.
Together these parks and open spaces form a not inconsiderable estate, which is well managed by the town’s Parks Manager Mr Mark Richardson and Estates Manager Mr Shaun Grainger.
On the Civic Centre site at Chiltern Avenue, Chiltern District Council has an excellent leisure centre providing swimming and diving pools, flumes, gymnasium, boules and tennis facilities A climbing centre opened early in 1997.
Privately owned sports grounds include Amersham and Chiltern Rugby Club in Weedon Lane; Chesham Bois Tennis and Squash Club in Woodfield Park, and Amersham-on-the-Hill Cricket Club in Woodside Road. Amersham Cricket Club plays in Shardeloes Park; Amersham Town Football Club has its ground in School Lane and there are several other private cricket, football and hockey clubs. In Cokes Lane is the eighteen hole course of Harewood Downs Golf Club and Little Chalfont Golf Club, a nine hole course, is situated in Lodge Lane.

The Amersham Music Club presents classical concerts as does the Amersham Music Festival. A choral society meets and performs in the town, and there are orchestral, light music and theatre groups in the area.
The Amersham Society based in the Old Town endeavours to preserve its old buildings, character and amenities. Its permanent Museum in a 15th Century medieval hall house in the High Street was opened in April 1991 and extended with a lottery grant in 2001, to display the history and artefacts of the Town and local area.
The activities of the Society will interest all who care about Amersham Old Town and want to preserve its character and amenities. A key aim of the Society is to be actively involved in the conservation of a living town, not just the preservation of its past. We study all planning applications for the old town; opposing plans where necessary to maintain the character of the town, whilst encouraging sympathetic conversion of old buildings and high standards of design in new developments.
The Society is involved in environmental issues of public concern and welcomes the views of its members. We have published leaflets and guides to help visitors to enjoy the historic town. Amersham Society members enjoy monthly lectures and discussions in the town’s 17th century Market Hall from September to April. During the summer months there is a programme of visits to places of interest. The newsletter, published three times a year, keeps members in touch.
The Amersham Society is a Registered Charity (No. 276870), it is also registered with the Civic Trust and a member of ANTAS the Association of North Thames Amenity Societies.
The Society has nearly 500 members and welcomes new members. The minimum subscription is only £4 p.a. (or £6 for two members of one family at the same address). If you would like to join, please contact the Membership Secretary, Mr R D Hockey, 8 Longfield Drive, Amersham HP6 5HD. t: 01494 433979
Amersham and District Community Association is an independent organisation, a registered charity, determining its own policy and programme and relying on voluntary service from its members for much of its work. The Community Centre consists of The Barn Hall and adjacent buildings which were originally part of Woodside Farm, built in the 17th Century and the purpose built Drake Hall. The Centre provides meeting places for many of the Association’s affiliated societies, accommodation for Adult Education Classes and many other functions.
There is also a League of Friends of Amersham and Chesham Hospitals who would welcome new members who will support functions and possibly do some voluntary work. Interested persons should contact the Chairman Mrs Norris. t: 01494 433469
Little Chalfont Preservation Society was founded in 1960 and now has a membership of some 700 subscribing households in the village. The Society aims to preserve and improve the rural character of Little Chalfont in conjunction with local government authorities and conservation organisations with similar aims, such as the Council for the Protection of Rural England and the Chiltern Society. It resists encroachment on green belt land, encourages housing development of a style and density appropriate to the area, and undertakes a wide range of activities to improve the environment and encourage wildlife. There are two general meetings of the Society each year, usually with a speaker on a local or environmental topic. Between these meetings the elected committee meets regularly to monitor local planning applications and deal with matters of concern raised by members or other village residents.
The Society’s striking display of daffodils each spring, the cultivation of the attractive village green and the provision of a colourful Christmas tree are obvious. Less obvious activities, but of vital importance to the village, are the planting of flowers and trees (often together with local schools), the protection and care of footpaths and the constant liaison with commercial concerns to ensure that their activities do not harm the local environment. Calming the road traffic through the village, the protection of established trees and woodland, and the revitalization of the shops of Little Chalfont are live topics in which the society is currently involved.
Amersham & District Residents Association was formed in 1960. The committee meets monthly to discuss and act upon a variety of local issues, including Planning, Environmental and Traffic matters, whilst working within the framework of the Association’s aims, which are to:
• Encourage action which will improve the quality of life in Amersham Chesham Bois and the surrounding area.
• Establish effective communication between residents and the Local Councils and other agencies.
• Maintain an active, non-party political stance in local affairs, in order to represent all residents.
• Nominate candidates for local elections and to support them fully.
• Representatives of the Association also serve on the Amersham on the Hill and Amersham Old Town Revitalisation Groups set up by Chiltern District Council and the Jubilee Steering Group set up by Amersham Town Council.
• The Association’s Newsletter is published in the Autumn each year and the AGM, which is usually lively and well-attended, is held in the Spring.
Join today. The greater our numbers (currently approximately 1475), the greater will be our standing in local affairs. An application form can be obtained from the Membership Secretary, Mrs Rosemary Dean on 01494 726517. If you are concerned about any local matter, please contact Carolyn Spencer or any committee member - a current list can be found in Amersham Library - and we will do out best to help.
If you think that you might be interested in joining the committee, we would be delighted to welcome you as a guest to one or more of our meetings before you commit yourself. Committee meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month. Further details from Chairman: Mr Bron Curley, Hydrons Lodge, 129 Woodside Avenue, Amersham. t: 01494 724988
