ALLOTMENT GARDENING There are sites at Borovere, Whitedown, Spitalfields and Wooteys owned and managed by Alton Town Council; for plot availability contact 01420 83986.

Alton Sports Centre is a multi functional sports centre in Alton that offers a fun and varied programme of activities. Its facilities include kinetika Gym, 2 Fitness Studios, Six lane 25m Training Pool, Learner Pool, Diving Pool, Health Suite, Sunbed, 6-court Main Hall, Indoor Climbing Wall, Adventure Zone- Kids adventure soft play area, Crèche, Cafe, Floodlit Artificial Turf Pitch and Four Squash Courts. Over 420,000 people use the centre annually covering a wide variety of ages and catering for every interest and ability. A number of junior courses and drop in sessions are run each term which include basketball, mini-tennis, Swimming Academy lessons and trampolining. Plus a variety of activities including crash swimming courses and jazz dance are run during the holidays.

BOWLING There is an excellent six rink green in the Public Gardens and another at Coors Brewery’s Sports Ground in Anstey Road.

CRICKET Alton Cricket Club play at Jubilee Playing Fields and other clubs also play at Jubilee and Anstey Park. There are numerous clubs in the adjoining villages.

DANCING The Assembly Rooms is the venue for regular dances of the Old Tyme, Modern Sequence Dancing Club, folk, line and square dancing.

ENTERTAINMENT The Palace Cinema in Normandy Street is used for the showing of films and for bingo. Details from 01420 82303.

Many events are held in the Assembly Rooms, including dances, exhibitions, an Arts Festival and concerts. The Alton Operatic and Dramatic Society produce a musical or operetta during March; drama productions are also produced occasionally - all at the Assembly Rooms. Telephone 01420 82203. Holybourne Theatre also stages productions at certain times of the year and is popular for its Christmas pantomime. Alton is conveniently close to the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre at Guildford, the Phoenix Theatre at Bordon and the Haymarket and Anvil Theatres at Basingstoke. Alton Rugby Club, Alton Bowling Club, the Royal British Legion and the Energique Fitness Club have club houses with licensed bars and organise many entertainments.

FOOTBALL Coors Alton Town Football Club play at Coors Sports Ground in Anstey Road and various youth football clubs play in Anstey Park and Jubilee Playing Fields.

GLIDING Lasham Airfield, which is about 3.1/2 miles from Alton, is the largest gliding centre in the United Kingdom and is administered by the Lasham Gliding Society. Gliding is available all year round with week-end and five day courses provided from February to November.

GOLF The Alton Golf Club has a sporting 9-hole course loftily sited near Anstey Wood on the main road northwards to Odiham. It is situated in picturesque country and welcomes visitors to the district. Tel: 01420 82942. Worldham Park is a public golf course that welcomes visitors both to the course and the driving range. Its aim has always been to provide golf for everybody at an affordable price and to as high a standard as possible and now has a Clubhouse with full catering facilities and changing rooms. It is an 18 hole parkland course with ponds and mature trees Sport in Anstey Parkmaking it a very attractive setting on the B3004 about a mile from the town centre. HOCKEY The town boasts a very active Hockey Club.

NETBALL Netball is played at Anstey Park where the tennis courts have a dual use. Floodlighting has been provided to enable the courts to be used for netball.

RUGBY Alton has a thriving Rugby Club which incorporates mini rugby for boys from 6-16 years. They have their own Clubhouse in Anstey Park.

SQUASH Squash is played at the Alton Sports Centre.

SWIMMING There is an open-air swimming pool at the Alton House Hotel and indoor pools at the Alton Sports Centre, together with a water shoot.

Energique Health and Fitness Club in Anstey Park also has a small indoor pool.

TENNIS There are public tennis courts at Anstey Park and the Alton Sports Centre. Others are at the Alton House Hotel. The Dome at Kingsley also caters for both tennis learners and players. Tel: 01420 489492. Alton Tennis Club is situated at the rear of the Alton Sports Centre and has 2 hard courts. They enter teams in the Aldershot & District & East Hants League.
