Introduction

Welcome to the Parish of Aldenham Guide 2007

Aldenham Crest

This Guide is different from those we produced in 1994 and 2000. As usual it contains updated information on the Parish of Aldenham, our Twin Towns, local societies, places of worship, organisations and schools. There is also an up-to-date road map of the Parish which includes all footpaths and bridleways.

What makes this Guide different is that it looks at the history of the area, what makes the area and the Parish of Aldenham different from anywhere else.

Over the years there have been several books and articles produced detailing the research done by various residents of the Parish. Among these are a series of articles in typewritten form bound together and available from the library which has two copies, entitled ‘A Collection of Articles on some Aspects of the History of Radlett and its Surroundings’ by Harold Knee (1974). The next is ‘The Book of Radlett and Aldenham’ by Donald Wratten (1990) and lastly ‘The History of the Manor of Aldenham in Hertfordshire’ by David Robertson (1993).

We are indebted to Philip Eastburn, a former Parish Councillor and to Brian Hyde, both lifetime residents, who compiled the historical articles contained in this edition. By tracing the history of Aldenham from the time before it was colonised we gain some insight into what makes up this small piece of England and why it is such a pleasant place to live. Without the efforts of those who preceded us, Aldenham may have been a very different place. The development of the area under the management of those Victorian landowners had perhaps the greatest influence on what we see today. However, I leave you to develop your own impressions as you read this Guide.

Please read and enjoy…
